Amazing Grace on the ocarina

Updated 2026-10-27

Amazing Grace sits comfortably on every ocarina in this key, F major, from C to high C, so it fits a 12-hole, a 6-hole and a 4-hole pendant. It is slow, in three, with long held notes that are good practice for a steady breath.

What is the tricky spot in Amazing Grace?

The opening leap from C up to F, which comes back at the start of most lines. On a 12-hole, from C to F you lift the right middle, right ring and right pinky.

The other hard part is the long high C in the middle, held for five beats. Long notes are where the pitch drifts: as your breath runs out the note sags flat, and a beginner often pushes harder at the start and lets it go sharp. Take a full breath before the phrase, start the C softly and keep the air speed the same until you stop the note with your tongue. A tuner shows you where the drift happens. On a 12-hole, the quick turn from A to F early in each line is two fingers, the left ring and the right index, going down together.

Which ocarina can play Amazing Grace?

Amazing Grace in this key fits a 12-hole, 6-hole or 4-hole ocarina in C. On an ocarina in G or F, use the same fingerings and it sounds lower. Every fingering is in the 12-hole fingering chart, and you can check your notes with a chromatic tuner (our own ocarina tuner is on its way).

Is Amazing Grace public domain?

Yes. John Newton's words were published in 1779 and he died in 1807. The tune, "New Britain", was printed in 1829 and in The Southern Harmony in 1835, which our tabs follow. We show the melody only. Music: the American tune "New Britain" (printed 1829 and 1835); words by John Newton (1725-1807).
