Lesson 6: Clean starts · 5 steps

Lesson 6 of 8

Clean starts

About 5 minutes. Have your ocarina ready.

  1. 1New note: C
  2. 2Exercise: Doo, doo, doo
  3. 3Exercise: Doo up the steps
  4. 4Short tuneJingle Bells
  5. 5Next lessonHigh notes

Lesson 6 teaches clean starts: saying doo into the ocarina so each note begins on time, and so a run of the same note sounds as separate notes. It ends with the first line of Jingle Bells.

How do you play the same note twice on an ocarina?

Stop the air for a moment between the two notes with your tongue, as if saying "doo", and keep your fingers still. Pure Ocarinas warns that puffing the notes "causes the volume and pitch to ramp up, then roll off"; a light tongue start avoids it. The lesson says "Again" when it hears one long note where you meant two.

Which tune does lesson 6 end with?

The first line of Jingle Bells, which begins with seven E's in a row. The tune is public domain: our tabs follow Heart Songs, Chapple Publishing, Boston, 1909, pages 148 to 149 (Internet Archive).
