Ocarina of Time songs on a real ocarina
Updated 2026-10-27
Every song Link plays in Ocarina of Time uses only five notes: D, F, A, B and high D. So all twelve fit a 12-hole or 6-hole ocarina in C. Pick a song for its notes, fingering pictures and game buttons. Never played before? Start with the 12-hole fingering chart.
How many ocarina songs are in Ocarina of Time?

Which note does each game button play?
Each of the five ocarina buttons plays one note. On a 12-hole ocarina in C you finger them like this:
| Button | Note | 12-hole fingering |
|---|---|---|
| A | D | Cover every main hole but the right pinky |
| C-down | F | Cover every main hole but the right middle, right ring and right pinky |
| C-right | A | Cover the left pinky, left middle, left index, left thumb and right thumb |
| C-left | B | Cover the left pinky, left index, left thumb and right thumb |
| C-up | high D | Cover the left pinky and right thumb |
How do you play the Scarecrow's Song?
The Scarecrow's Song has no set notes: you compose it. As a child, Link plays a tune of his own to the scarecrow by the lake, and as an adult he plays the same tune again to make the other scarecrow appear in hidden spots. On a real ocarina, make yours from the five game notes, D, F, A, B and high D, and write it down so you remember it.
Which ocarina is best for the Zelda songs?
Any 12-hole or 6-hole ocarina in C plays all twelve. A 4-hole pendant cannot reach high D, so it misses the songs that use it. Our buying guide explains what to look for, and you can check whether your ocarina plays in tune with a chromatic tuner (our own ocarina tuner is on its way).
